Acceptance
January 15, 2010. This is the day I will always remember. This was the day I said good-bye to what the world considered beautiful for black women, and conformed to what black beauty was really about. Yes. I cut off the straight hair and went to being what most described as being "Nappy". yes mam...NAPPY AND PROUD. If you think you are ready to be liberated and join the movement of the first step to acceptance, come follow me and check out the links I have to help with the transition. If you can't at least accept what God has given you, then how the hell you going accept others. CAN I GET AN AMEN?
It has been such a long time since I've updated my blog. Since then much has been accomplished. Just to name a few, I won first place at the Florida Georgia Louis Strokes Alliance for Minorities conference in the oral competition for chemistry and Biophysics. I was so proud of myself. I also placed third at my school's Research and Performing Arts Day where I was granted a prize of $100. Might not seem much but I was elated. There was a final competition held at St. Thomas University but I failed to place. Even though this was the outcome, I learnt that you cannot win it all. The most you can do is put your message out, do your best and hope for a positive response. you cannot please them all. These words were well picked when they were advised to me by my Calculus 2 professor Dr. Deselgne, who I must add is from Ethiopia.
During this time, I made the decision to attain a combined degree: MD/Ph.D. Why the change? I have realized that although I do enjoy research, I still have a part of me that is anxious to pursue a career in medicine. Choosing just one would have left me with an emptiness which I knew I would regret in the future. I am also hoping to specialize in Oncology because cancer research has stuck me as being very interesting. I am hoping that through this, I will find my purpose in life and contribute my knowledge to this growing and important field of research.
Marriage is drawing near as well. I'm just waiting on the proposal and hoping to not jinx myself. Already took the first step of moving in, and is now waiting for the official "WILL YOU MARRY ME". I do hope that my life stays on track, and that my dreams do come true: a loving husband, successful career in science and research, and of course a business of my own where my wealth will draw from.
SN: I recommend "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyasaki for anyone who does not want to work for someone for the rest of their lives, just to end up broke and with nothing to give to their children.
